Built upon the rich Lowcountry traditions, the Cane Bay High School Band program strives to provide a high quality music education for all students while focusing on the development of a well-rounded individual in society. By providing a rigorous music curriculum in a safe environment, the Cane Bay High School Band program aspires to foster a life-long relationship with both music and the other fine arts. The Cane Bay Bands are under the direction of Dr Ryan Westberry and Mr. Jonnie Hernandez.
DIRECTORS
Dr. Ryan Westberry
Ryan Westberry is currently in his third year as director at Cane Bay High School in Summerville, SC where he directs three concert bands, a jazz band, a percussion ensemble, and the marching band. He earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Furman University, a Master of Music Education, and an Educational Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of South Carolina, where he served as a graduate assistant with the Carolina Bands.
Before Cane Bay, Dr. Westberry was the assistant band director at Effingham County High School (GA), band director at Aiken Middle School and Aiken High School, an adjunct professor of music at USC-Aiken, and the Coordinator of Visual and Performing Arts for Berkeley County. Consistently earning Superior and Excellent ratings in marching contests, concert festivals, and jazz festivals in South Carolina and Georgia.
Dr. Westberry was also named Teacher of the Year at Aiken Middle School in 2005 and was awarded the Golden Apple from WJBF TV in Augusta, GA in 2006. He is an active clinician working with South Carolina and Georgia ensembles. Dr. Westberry is a member of the National Association for Music Education, South Carolina Band Directors Association, Phi Beta Mu and lives in Summerville with his beautiful wife, Wendy, and two amazing daughters, Ella and Molly.
Mr. Jonathan Hernandez
Jonathan Hernandez, a native of Columbia, SC, is currently in his first year as director at Cane Bay High School and is the Co-Director of the Berkeley All-County High School Jazz Band. He was previously the band director at Cane Bay Middle School. Mr. Hernandez received his Bachelor of Arts with an emphasis in Music Education from Charleston Southern University. During his time at CSU, Mr. Hernandez was a member of the following ensembles: Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, Jazz Combo, Steel Pan Band, Saxophone Quartet, and Marching Band. As a member of the marching band, he served as a drum major for two years. He was also the President of the Collegiate National Association for Music Education, CSU Chapter 751. Mr. Hernandez studied saxophone under Professor Mark Sterbank.
Not only is he a music educator, but he also maintains an active schedule as a musician by performing solo and in combos of his own. He has performed with the Joe Clarke Big Band, The Gatsby Orchestra, the Blue Dogs, as well as the Beehive Orchestra under the direction of Grammy award winning musician, Charlton Singleton. Mr. Hernandez is professionally affiliated with the National Association for Music Education, the Jazz Education Network, and the South Carolina Band Directors Association.
He also has served as a site host in the Charleston area for Solo and Ensemble and currently serves as a board member and site host for the Jazz Committee in the SCBDA. In the spring of 2024, Mr. Hernandez was awarded the Outstanding Potential Award from the American School Band Directors Association. Mr. Hernandez currently resides in Sangaree with his wife, Leah, who is an accomplished flutist and music educator, and their dog, Frannie.
